Currently exist "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar indicating Trump had pushed him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump embraced a truce plan supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he said.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, implying that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky said talks regarding the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of reports that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
