Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
