China's Economy Growth Decelerates as Trade Tensions with US Flare Up

China's economic expansion slowed during the three months concluding in September as commercial disputes with the United States escalated.

The world's second-largest economy grew by four point eight percent compared to the same period in the previous year, representing its slowest rate in twelve months, according to government figures published on Monday.

This financial information surfaces following China's implementation of comprehensive controls on its exports of rare earths - critical minerals for global electronics manufacturing, a decision that disrupted the fragile trade truce with the US.

The three-month period gross domestic product expansion will establish the atmosphere for a meeting of China's top leaders this week to examine the country's development plan covering the period between 2026 and 2030.

Key Financial Metrics

The 4.8% growth in the third quarter signified a slowdown from the 5.2% registered in the quarter ending in mid-year.

China's statistical authority announced the economic system demonstrated "strong resilience and dynamism" against external pressure, attributing momentum in its tech industry and business services as key growth drivers.

Beijing has established a goal of "approximately five percent" economic growth this calendar year and has so far avoided a sharp downturn, assisted by government support measures.

International Trade Situations

US President Donald Trump responded swiftly to China's restrictions on rare earths by threatening extra 100% tariffs on goods from China.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated he anticipates to meet Chinese officials this week in Malaysia in an effort to ease tensions and organize a summit between Trump and his counterpart President Xi.

Prior to the recent escalation, Chinese businesses had capitalized of the commercial ceasefire with the United States to ship goods to the American market, resulting in China's overseas shipments increasing by eight point four percent in last month.

Industry Performance

The overall worth of foreign goods to the country was also higher, while China's industrial output grew by six point five percent last month from a year earlier.

Manufacturers in 3D-printing, robotics and EVs were among its best-performing sectors, while the services industry, which encompasses technology services, advisory firms, and transport and logistics, also experienced growth.
