Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections are over.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor commented when pressed about seriously considering a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he noted that any choice is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, leveraging his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase the party's congressional seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has made him a target from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on a major news network. Duffy revealed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, after a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that caused loss of life and four injuries.

His administration pointed out that the national authorities had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a CDL under federal law.

Duffy had previously indicated he was withholding $40 million from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office responded in a last month's statement addressing the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A recently conducted study found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
