Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has announced what is being called the largest changes to combat unauthorized immigration "in modern times".

The proposed measures, inspired by the stricter approach enacted by Scandinavian policymakers, makes refugee status conditional, narrows the appeal process and proposes visa bans on nations that refuse repatriation.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

Individuals approved for protection in the UK will be permitted to reside in the country for limited periods, with their situation reassessed at two-and-a-half-year intervals.

This means people could be returned to their home country if it is considered "secure".

The system echoes the method in Denmark, where protected persons get temporary residence documents and must submit new applications when they expire.

The government says it has begun supporting people to repatriate to Syria voluntarily, following the overthrow of the current administration.

It will now start exploring compulsory deportations to that country and other nations where people have not typically been sent back to in recent times.

Refugees will also need to be settled in the UK for 20 years before they can seek settled status - increased from the current 60 months.

Meanwhile, the government will create a new "employment and education" visa route, and encourage refugees to obtain work or begin education in order to transition to this route and qualify for residency sooner.

Human Rights Law Overhaul

The home secretary also aims to eliminate the practice of allowing numerous reviews in asylum cases and introducing instead a unified review process where every argument must be raised at once.
