The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company Unilever stopped the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business with his partner, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the continuing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
