On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Various sections of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals ten times the healthy level recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the capital as colder weather begins.

Nevertheless recently, the recently formed regional leadership approached the highest court to request a modification of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various research.

This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature fatalities each year in the city.
