The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
