Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
